Norfolk VA Makeup Artist Kim Porter
One of the nice things about working in the wedding industry is finding others with the same drive and passion for creating your best wedding day experience. We are very fortunate to have Kim Porter of the Makeup Studio and Beauty Lounge in the Norfolk, Virginia Beach area. Her studio is located in Wayside Village Shops on Virginia Beach Blvd. next to Willis Furniture. The shops are catered to be a wedding vendors lane and a one stop shop. Her clients range from celebrities, TV personalities, politicians and her work can be seen in The Knot and Style Me Pretty. I had the pleasure of speaking with her about her talents
What would you like for future brides and bridal parties to know about you and your services?
We truly care about them and are there to help to create a non-stressful day. One of our trademarks is creating a classic, timeless look for the bride. Over the past three years airbrush makeup application is in high demand and it’s so great because you use less makeup for more coverage and it’s water-resistant. On one occasion, we had the Maid of Honor pop the champagne and it accidentally exploded all over the bride’s face after her makeup was done. I was concerned I would need to re-do her makeup but after dabbing her face, I saw her makeup was untouched. The bride and the bridal party also receive a touch-up kit to keep them looking flawless all day and night.
What makes you stand out from others in your industry?
It’s more than just about makeup, I’m there with each bride and feel as if it’s just as important as my wedding day. I want the bride and her bridal party to feel relaxed, stay on track and on time. I’ve even found myself helping the flower girls get dressed or directing guests on where to be seated.
How do you find design inspiration?
Mainly pinterest and award ceremonies like The Academy Awards. I love to create a timeless, classic signature look for my bridal clients.
Please provide your vision to help create the perfect day for a bride.
I love for the day to feel relaxed, for everyone to be having fun and a non-stressful experience. I don’t want the brides or bridesmaids to worry about anything and just enjoy spending time with the ones they love and getting pampered.
Any advice for brides prepping for their wedding photos?
Stay away from high definition powders and foundations with SPF, as they can cause you to look like a ghost with flash photography. Schedule your engagement session separate from your wedding preview/trial makeup as the engagement photos are usually more casual and will have different lighting than your wedding venue. I prefer bride’s to use their trial appointment for the bridal portrait session or for a date night! Before the wedding day lightly exfoliate, have well moisturized skin and avoid any peels or waxing as they can affect the makeup. For the wedding day keep an invisible blotting powder on hand to avoid looking shiny.
Kim has her own beauty line at kimporterbeauty.com. You can put together your own custom palette with eyeshadows, blush and face powders.
